Heart Fire Cocoa -- mixed drink & story

To a shaker, add:

  • 1 shot whiskey
  • 1 shot kahlua
  • 1 drop peppermint essential oil
  • 1/2 shot chocolate syrup
  • 1 egg white

dry shake (without ice) for 10 seconds, then add:

  • 1 shot half and half
  • ice

and shake another 20 seconds.

Strain, and pour into two glasses. One for you, one for your best friend of over a decade.

Get comfortable on large pillows in front of the fireplace in your house. Her home. Your home, though rarely visited. Sip your drinks and share pictures of crushes, laugh about 10 year old memories of places and people and times in your life.

Show her photos of the kids that are as close to your own kids you'll probably ever have. Swap stories of the infancy of your friendship, reflecting on it's first steps like you'd tell an eager preteen funny baby stories.

Sit in silence for a while, staring at the fire. Interrupt it with an honest truth. "I missed you, and I'm sorry I got so caught up in that thing for so long, that I drifted."

"I missed you, and I'm sorry I stepped back after trying to help you out of that thing so many times. At a certain point I realized you weren't going to come out by any force but your own, so all I could do was try to stay present but not as engaged."

Cry a little bit, then get your colored pencils. Begin to compile "Our Master List of Relationship Red Flags." Take photos and post it on the fridge when you're done. Promise each other to actually both pay attention to it next time.

Promise each other not to hide details again. Because any truth too difficult to share with your heartmate is a truth you shouldn't be living with.

Make a second round of drinks. It's midnight, but the night is young.
